The January 2022 PIPI study will examine industry outlook, strategic groups, and financial performance benchmarks. In addition, the survey plans to seek insights from economics professors related to how the industry outlook compares to that of the general economy, nationally and regionally. The January survey will include four or five questions exploring the industry outlook. As the industry is very diverse – digital, signage, data management, sheetfed printing, web printing, fulfillment, web-to-print to name a few processes applied today – the survey aims to statistically develop strategic groups representing organizations with similar strategic characteristics. 

This survey is much shorter and more concise than our October survey.

A strategic group represents a set of firms within an industry pursuing a similar strategy. For instance, firms apply different strategies in the restaurant industry: fast food, fine dining, and many others. As the printing industry has become more diverse, printing firms are applying a variety of strategies. From our results, we hope to provide helpful financial benchmarks and strategic knowledge for each strategic group.
