COVID-19 Updates from Governor Whitmer

Michigan State Press Conference Summary: 4/3 - 4/6

Michigan Senate Votes to Extend Coronavirus Emergency Declaration by 23 Days

Governor Gretchen Whitmer said last week that she wanted the State Legislature to extend the Emergency Declaration and Disaster order for 70 more days -- bringing us to June 9. Senators voted earlier today deciding to extend the state’s emergency declaration for the coronavirus pandemic by just 23 days for now, bringing us to April 30. The Michigan House is expected to take a similar vote later today.

“We agree that emergency circumstances persist in our state and are prepared to support an extension of the governor’s emergency declaration, but feel a 70 day extension is too long," read a statement last week from Rep. Mike Shirkey (R-Clarklake), the Michigan Senate Majority Leader.

Governor Whitmer says the “Stay-at-Home” order, originally slated to end on April 14, will also likely be extended.

Whitmer said she’s expecting an additional order this week for the “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order, but it’s unclear how long it would be extended for at this time. The most up to date information will be posted online.

Healthcare Coverage Options Available for Michigan Residents During Coronavirus Outbreak

Michiganders who lose employer-based health insurance may have options to continue or replace their coverage,” said DIFS Director Anita G. Fox. “If consumers have questions about enrolling, DIFS (Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services) is available to assist.” Consumers have 60 days after losing essential health coverage, such as through a job loss, or experienced a change in income to take advantage of a Special Enrollment Period. Depending on income and their situation, consumers may qualify for cost sharing reductions, premium tax credits, coverage for their children (CHIP), or Medicaid. Consumers should contact DIFS toll free at 877-999-6442 if they need assistance. To determine eligibility, consumers should visit www.healthcare.gov.

Know Your Rights

The Attorney General’s office recently added a new section to its website, Know Your Employment Rights, to provide Michigan residents with more information on the legal rights of employees and employers under the executive order.
