Future in Focus: GMA’s Student Scholarship Interviews Spotlight Print’s Bright Tomorrow
Interview with Andrew Schall, President of Graphic Media Alliance During the 2025 PIEF Scholarship Interview Tour
Q: Andrew, this year’s PIEF scholarship cycle has reached new heights. What’s driving the momentum?
This has been an exceptional year for the Printing Industries Education Funds. We received over 30 scholarship applications—our highest total to date—from students representing our Southern, Central, Northern, and Michigan regions. Beyond the numbers, what stands out is the depth of preparation and professionalism from these students. It’s a clear sign that our outreach efforts and workforce programs are resonating.
Q: Where were the interviews conducted this year?
We were fortunate to partner with several of our member companies, as well as host interviews at our GMA offices. It created an excellent environment where students could engage directly with industry professionals in real-world settings. We kicked things off last Wednesday at Sheridan in Chelsea, followed by interviews at VisComm in the Northern Region and RPI Graphic Data Solutions in the Southern Region. The week continued with sessions across all four regions. These business-based settings brought a level of professionalism and authenticity that made the experience even more impactful—for both the students and our dedicated PIEF Board of Trustees.
Q: What has impressed you most about the students you met this year?
The students have been incredibly well-prepared, with a solid vision for the future. Many are pursuing careers that include not just design, but also print production, operations, packaging, and more. It’s exciting to see that shift—where production is viewed as innovative and essential. One student even said, “Print is still the number one marketing communication tool.” That kind of understanding is powerful—and completely accurate.
Q: How are students responding to GMA’s outreach programs and events?
It’s been one of the most rewarding parts of this process. Students are coming in and repeating messages they heard at our events. They’re quoting our industry insights, referencing companies they met, and sharing how events like FORE the WIN made a lasting impression. It’s clear that the work we’re doing to promote the industry is not only being heard—it’s being absorbed and embraced.
Q: How do the member companies and instructors play a role in preparing these students?
Instructors and advisors are playing a critical role in student readiness, and our member companies have stepped up to provide an authentic interview setting. From hosting students onsite to participating in the evaluation process, our members are invested in the future workforce. It’s a testament to the strength of our community and the importance we all place on developing talent.
Q: What does this level of engagement say about the future of print?
It says we’re in good hands. These students aren’t just hopeful—they’re intentional. They’ve thought through how they’ll pay for school, where they want to work, and what impact they want to make. And they’re choosing print as their path. With this kind of enthusiasm and clarity coming from the next generation, we can be confident that the future of our industry is bright, resilient, and innovative.
Q: Final thoughts?
A heartfelt thank you to our PIEF Board of Trustees for their time, professionalism, and commitment. Their work in conducting these interviews is truly shaping the future of the printing industry. This year’s applicant pool is a reflection of what happens when strong mentorship, engaged companies, and student opportunity come together.
