New 50% Tariff on Canadian Goods: What Printers Need to Know

Recent trade action by the Trump Administration could have significant implications for printing and graphic communications companies that rely on products imported from Canada.

On July 20, President Trump announced three proclamations imposing a new 50% tariff on a wide range of Canadian imports under Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect on August 19, 2026, and apply to many products used throughout manufacturing, including several that are relevant to the printing industry.

What Is Changing?

Unlike previous trade actions, these tariffs are being implemented under Section 338, a provision that has never before been used to impose tariffs. The new duties apply to hundreds of Canadian products, even if they qualify under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), with only limited exceptions.

While the administration cited disputes involving dairy, alcoholic beverages, and automobiles as the basis for the action, the list of affected products extends well beyond those industries. Many manufacturing and industrial goods are included, creating potential impacts across numerous supply chains.

What This Could Mean for Printers

Many print and graphic communications companies purchase equipment, components, substrates, packaging materials, chemicals, or other products that originate in Canada. Depending on your supply chain, these tariffs could lead to:

  • Higher material and equipment costs
  • Increased pricing from suppliers
  • Longer lead times as companies adjust sourcing strategies
  • Additional budgeting challenges for capital purchases

Not every printing company will be affected, but organizations that purchase Canadian-made products or work with suppliers who do should evaluate whether these new duties could impact future pricing.

Steps Your Company Should Consider

Graphic Media Alliance encourages members to begin assessing their exposure now, before the tariffs take effect.

Consider the following:

  • Review your current suppliers and identify products sourced from Canada.
  • Contact key vendors to determine whether any materials or equipment you purchase are subject to the new tariffs.
  • Evaluate upcoming capital purchases or long-term contracts that could be affected by increased costs.
  • Monitor pricing changes and discuss alternative sourcing options where appropriate.

Graphic Media Alliance Is Monitoring the Situation

Trade policy continues to evolve, and additional guidance or changes could occur before the August 19 implementation date.

Graphic Media Alliance is actively monitoring developments and will continue to keep members informed as new information becomes available. If significant changes occur or additional guidance is issued that affects the printing industry, we will share updates through our advocacy communications.
