October Workplace Safety Update: Small Hazards Can Carry Big Risks

Source: Sedgwick, October 2026

Creating a safer workplace often starts with recognizing hazards before they result in an injury or incident. Sedgwick’s October 2026 Workplace Safety Update provides employers with several timely reminders and practical steps for protecting employees.

This month’s lead topic focuses on combustible dust and the prevention of dust explosions. Fine particles from organic materials, metals and other materials can become combustible under the right conditions. Sedgwick stresses three basic prevention principles: keep dust out of the air as much as possible, keep accumulated dust cleaned up and keep ignition sources away. The update also outlines engineering and administrative controls, including ventilation, dust collection, routine inspections, employee training and appropriate PPE.

October is also National Protect Your Hearing Month, and the update highlights warning signs of excessive workplace noise along with steps employers can take to reduce exposure, including regular noise monitoring, hearing protection, quieter equipment and hearing conservation training.

In recognition of National Ergonomics Month, Sedgwick takes a seasonal approach to common workstation "hauntings," including poor wrist positioning, laptop posture, reaching for a mouse, inadequate back support and unsupported feet. Small adjustments to a workstation today can help prevent discomfort and injury over time.

The October update rounds out the discussion with information on opioid awareness and workplace safety, as well as an OSHA Corner highlighting Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) and the role employers and employees can play in building stronger workplace safety programs.
