USPS Pricing Under Scrutiny: What Mailers Need to Watch for 2027
Source: Mailers Hub News, August 24, 2026
As businesses begin planning for 2027, uncertainty surrounding future postage rates remains an important concern for the printing and mailing industry.
According to the August 24 edition of Mailers Hub News, the Postal Regulatory Commission (PRC) denied a request from the United States Postal Service (USPS) to modify how certain pricing adjustments are calculated.
The USPS had sought permission to use estimated and unaudited financial and volume data to accelerate access to additional pricing authority. The request was connected to the Postal Service's proposed transition from July to January as the annual adjustment period for market-dominant postal products.
However, the PRC determined that the proposed approach did not meet the requirements for a waiver, citing concerns about the use of estimated data, rate stability, and the need for a more comprehensive regulatory review.
Why This Matters to GMA Members
For commercial printers, direct mail providers, and businesses that depend on the USPS, predictable postage rates are essential to maintaining competitive pricing and helping customers plan effective marketing campaigns.
Changes to the timing or calculation of postal rate adjustments could influence:
- Customer Estimates: Preparing accurate pricing for future direct mail campaigns.
- Business Planning: Forecasting mailing expenses and developing 2027 budgets.
- Marketing Strategies: Helping customers evaluate the cost and timing of printed communications.
- Operational Decisions: Planning production schedules and coordinating mailing services.
While the PRC's August decision rejected the requested waiver, it did not definitively resolve the Postal Service's broader plans for future pricing adjustments.
